The NW Narrow Web Tension Transducer is a specialized bearing-mounted cantilevered idler roll with integrated dual tension sensors for measuring tension in a moving narrow web of paper, film, foil or other material.

Constructed of stainless steel and aluminum for excellent corrosion resistance, the NW transducer can be used as the sensing mechanism in a web tension control or display system in a continuous label, tag, or tape process. It mounts on a single-sided machine frame in the path with the cantilevered idler rolls.

Precision-balanced sensing elements fixed internally at each end of the idler roll deliver a highly accurate tension signal. This arrangement is functionally the same as wide web tension measuring schemes, using two tension transducers and a separate idler roll. The sensing elements measure total web tension accurately regardless of web position on the roll, and regardless of which edge of the web is tighter.

The Narrow Web transducer is available in three roll diameters: NW size 0 is 2.25 inches (57 mm); NW size 1 is 3 inches (76 mm); and the NW size 2 is 3.5 inches (89 mm).

An option of the Narrow Web tension transducer is a built-in, digital, LED tension display at the end of the roll. The base of the NW roll bolts onto the cantilevered frame of a press or machine at a desired point in the web path and reads out running tension on the LED display at the outside end during operation. For a machine operator, who must make control adjustments when web tension runs outside acceptable limits, the direct on-roll tension display is convenient and easy-to-read.

The Segmented Tension Roll transducer is a specialty idler roller that measures tension on multiple individual web strands in a slitting and rewind environment. It also serves to measure tension at multiple points across the width of a single web in a converting or printing application.

Tension Roll® transducers and dead-shaft idler roll are combined in one integral unit. No assembly is required. Faster, easier, and less expensive to install than separate roll and transducers. The TR Tension Roll^® Transducer is also referred to by some of our customers as the Dover Roller, the Tension Roller and sometimes the Tension Measurement Roller. Any way you call it, it is the easiest way for printers and manufacturers to measure web tension on a press or converting machinery.

No assembly required! Just specify your desired shaft length, load rating, and roll diameter. This is faster, easier and less expensive than installing a separate idler roller with 2 transducers (a.k.a load cells). The VNW (Very Narrow Web) transducer is a compact tension sensing device for measuring process tension in narrow web (up to four inches wide), ribbon or filament. The VNW transducer combines the robust and versatile design of DFE's time-proven Model C shaft-end transducers with a choice of mounting styles and wheel options from the RFA -style cantilevered transducers. DFE has kept the quality of the VNW transducer high while offering it at a highly competitive base price.

A VNW transducer is cantilever-mounted on process machinery for unwind, payoff, rewind, take-up, or intermediate zone applications. Tension is measured by high-output silicon strain gages housed internally on a dual cantilevered transducer beam and connected in a wheatstone bridge configuration. As the ribbon or filament passes over the rotating transport wheel, the force of the substrate on the wheel shaft causes a minute deflection of the transducer beam. The resulting change in strain gage resistance yields a voltage output from the transducer that is proportional to tension. The transducer output is then amplified by a DFE indicator or automatic controller for tension measurement or complete closed-loop tension control.

The VNW transducer's standard configuration has an aluminum beam with a stainless steel housing and shaft holder. The five mounting styles offered are single bolt (with an alternative to face-mount the transducer on the opposite side of the machine frame using a bolt pattern on the transducer front), flange, pillow block, piloted flange, or through-frame.

All wheels are optional accessories; no wheel is provided as standard since many customers prefer to supply their own shafts and wheels. Wheels are shaft-mounted with the shaft inserted into the transducer's face coupling and secured by set screws. The shaft insertion depth can be adjusted (+/- 0.25 inch) for proper alignment of the wheel with the web. On the standard unit the electrical connector is positioned at 6 o'clock (same as the tension force direction).

The model C^*transducer is the industry standard in strain-gauge based web tension transducers (sometimes called 'load cells'). Available in three frame sizes and both live-shaft and dead-shaft versions. Dead-shaft Model C Transducers are sealed to protect the inside from dust and water. Recessed seals are protected from damage. Choose from five available mounting styles: "S" (screw mount), "FL" (flange mount), "PB" (pillow block mount), "PFL" (piloted flange mount), "TF" (through-frame mount). One F transducer mounts under the pillow block bearing at each end of the roll shaft. Designed for use in demanding tension measurement environments, the F transducer shell has a single-piece aluminum base with a removable stainless steel top plate. A rubber seal between the base and top plate prevents water intrusion or other contamination. The transducer’s electrical connector is located at the end of a short cable for simpler access during installation.

The F series transducers supersede the UPB style tension transducers which are also still available.

The F transducer is available in a V (vertical) configuration for use when the applied force is roughly perpendicular to the top plate of the transducer. It is also available in an H (horizontal) configuration for use when the applied force is oriented more parallel to the transducer top plate. The F transducer mounts on a stable machine frame surface using one bolt (size 2), or two bolts (size 3) on each end.

The F transducer is available in two sizes. Load ratings range to 1200 lbs in the size 2 and 5000 lbs. in the size 3.
