XENSIV™ - TLE4997E linear Hall sensor for highly accurate rotation and position detection

The Infineon linear Hall IC TLE4997has been designed specifically to meet the demands of highly accurate rotation and position detection, as well as for current measurement applications. The sensor provides a ratiometric analog output voltage, which is ideally suited to Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion with the supply voltage as a reference. The IC is produced in BiCMOS technology with high voltage capability and also provides reverse polarity protection. Digital signal processing using a 16-bit DSP architecture and digital temperature compensation guarantees excellent stability over a long period of time. The minimum overall resolution is 12 bits. Nevertheless, some internal stages work with resolutions up to 20 bits.

XENSIV™ - Linear Hall sensor with SPC (Short PWM Code) protocol

The linear Hall IC TLE4998C has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of highly accurate angle and position detection as well as for current measurement applications. The sensor provides a digital SPC (Short PWM Code) signal, based on the standardized SENT (Single Edge Nibble Transmission, SAE J2716) protocol. The SPC protocol allows transmissions initiated by the ECU. Two further operation modes are available: “range selection” for dynamical switching of the measurement range during operation ,“ID selection” to build a bus system with up to 4 ICs on a single output line and a common supply, which can be individually accessed by the ECU. Each transmission sequence contains an adjustable number of nibbles representing the magnetic field, the temperature value and a status information of the sensor.The output stage is an open-drain driver pulling the output pin to low only. Therefore, the high level needs to be obtained by an external pull-up resistor. This output type has the advantage that the receiver may use an even lower supply voltage (e.g. 3.3 V). In this case the pull-up resistor must be connected to the given receiver supply. The IC is produced in BiCMOS technology with high voltage capability, and it also has reverse-polarity protection. Digital signal processing using a 16-bit DSP architecture together with digital temperature compensation guarantee excellent long-time stability compared to analog compensation methods. While the overall resolution is 16 bits, some internal stages work with resolutions up to 20 bits.

The Infineon linear Hall IC TLE4998P has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of highly accurate rotation and position detection, as well as for current measurement applications. The sensor provides a digital PWM signal, which is ideally suited for direct decoding by any unit measuring a duty cycle of a rectangular signal (usually a timer/capture unit in a microcontroller). Furthermore, it is possible to attach an external lowpass filter, which allows an A/D conversion using the sensor supply voltage as a reference. The output stage is an open-drain driver pulling the output pad to low only. Therefore, the high level must be obtained by an external pull-up resistor. This output type has the advantage that the receiver may use even a lower supply voltage (e.g. 3.3 V). In this case, the pull-up resistor must be connected to the given receiver supply.The IC is produced in BiCMOS technology with high voltage capability, also providing reverse polarity protection. Digital signal processing, using a 16-bit DSP architecture together with digital temperature compensation, guarantees excellent long-time stability as compared to analog compensation methods. While the overall resolution is 16 bits, some internal stages work with resolutions up to 20 bits. The PWM output frequency can be selected within the range of 122 Hz up to 1953 Hz.

Infineon´s differential Hall effect sensor TLE4921-5U provides a high sensitivity and a superior stability over temperature and symmetrical thresholds in order to achieve a stable duty cycle. TLE4921-5U is particularly suitable for rotational speed detection and timing applications of ferromagnetic toothed wheels such as anti-lock braking systems, transmissions, crankshafts, etc. The integrated circuit (based on Hall effect) provides a digital signal output with frequency proportional to the speed of rotation. The TLE4966-3K is an integrated circuit dual Hall-effect sensor designed specifically for highly accurate applications which use a rotating pole wheel. Precise magnetic switching points and high temperature stability are achieved by active compensation circuits and chopper techniques on chip. The sensor provides a speed output at Q2 with the status (high or low) corresponding to the magnetic field value. For positive magnetic fields (south pole) exceeding the threshold B _OP the output is low, whereas for negative magnetic fields (north pole) lower than B _RP the output switches to high. The output Q1 can be either high or low depending on the direction of rotation of the pole wheel. This direction information is calculated internally.

With the TLE493D-W2B6 A0-A3, a 3D sensor has been developed, which includes an enhanced dynamic wake up feature. Four pre-programmed address options (A0-A3) will be available, enabling for a fast start up initialization, when used in I2 C bus configurations. Infineon´s TLI493D-A2B6 is designed for all kinds of sensing applications, especially in the industrial area such as multifunction knobs or white good applications.
It measures the magnetic field in X, Y and Z direction. Each X-, Y- and Z-Hall probe is connected sequentially to a multiplexer, which is then connected to an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC). Optional, the temperature (default = activated) can be determined as well after the three Hall channels.

The Infineon XENSIV^TM TLI493D-W2BW uses our latest 3D Hall generation and is housed in an extremely small wafer-level package. With an 87 percent smaller footprint and 46 percent less height than previous comparable products, the sensor paves the way for new design options.

Due to the small WLB-5 package (1.13 mm x 0.93 mm x 0.59 mm) and the low current consumption of 7 nA in power-down mode, the magnetic sensor is also suitable for use in applications that previously used resistor-based or optical solutions.

In particular, the low height of the TLI493D-W2BW is helpful in extremely space-critical applications such as BLDC commutation in micromotors or control elements such as joysticks or game consoles. It enables designs with double-sided PCBs or positioning of the sensor between two PCBs. This allows optimal use of the available space; for example, additional components can be placed above the sensor.

Here, the miniaturization of the sensors allows on the one hand a more compact design or on the other hand the integration of further functionalities on the same construction space.

TLI493D-W2BW with its extremely small housing enables designs with double-sided printed circuit boards or the positioning of the sensor between two printed circuit boards. This makes it possible to make even better use of the available PCB surface. For example, other components can be placed above the sensor. Infineon’s TLI493D-W2BW magnetic 3D sensor combines high-accuracy magnetic field measurements with an extremely compact footprint and exceptionally low power consumption (min. 7 nA). This sensor opens up a host of exciting new use cases including innovative human-machine interfaces in the form of industrial joysticks, ergonomic pushbuttons on domestic appliances and highly precise position control in robotics.

Due to the extremely small housing and the low current consumption, the TLI493D sensors are also suitable for use in applications that have not yet used magnetic sensors, e.g. as a replacement for potentiometers and optical solutions.
