Many installation professionals choose to install pre-terminated trunks to minimize the potential for fiber cable damage during field termination. But pulling pre-terminated trunks can lead to damage if not done correctly, with connectors being knocked off during the installation process. Cables or trunks can also be damaged due to improper pulling, jacket stress, tension or a tight bend radius. When this type of damage occurs – oftentimes unknowingly to the installer – cable performance suffers for the end-user.

Belden wanted to create a solution that would allow installers to easily route cable and install pre-terminated trunks without having to worry about damage along the way. To do this, we narrowed in on improving the pulling eye.

In a typical installation, a pulling eye is located at the end of a flexible gripping cord, which grips the jacket and distributes pulling tension to reduce damage – pulling eyes make it easier to pull pre-terminated trunks.

By attaching a hook through the pulling eye, installers can successfully pull fiber cable through ductwork (conduit, trays and raceways) or small, tight spaces. In pre-terminated assemblies, pulling eyes (with a protective sock) protect connectors at cable ends to ensure proper performance once the system is up and running.
