Manufacturing Operations Management Software (MOM)

Manufacturing operations management (MOM) software is used to manage the creation, development, production, and distribution of products and services. There are many types of MOM software. Examples include production management software, performance analysis software, quality and compliance software, and human machine interface (HMI) software. Production management software provides real-time information about jobs and orders, labor and materials, machine status, and product shipments. Performance analysis software displays metrics at the machine, line, plant and enterprise level for situational or historical analysis. Quality and compliance software is used to promote compliance with standards and specifications for operational processes and procedures. HMI software is a form of manufacturing operations management (MOM) software that enables operators to manage industrial and process control machinery using a computer-based interface.

Portal-style products are designed to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) and improve productivity. Features like personalization enable this type of MOM software to provide different reports to managers and operators.

Manufacturing operations management (MOM) software includes quality and compliance software, human machine interface (HMI) software, and other software applications for production facilities. Manufacturers use quality software and compliance software to ensure regulatory compliance and promote adherence to quality standards from groups such as the International Standards Organization (ISO). Like quality and quality software, HMI applications represent an important type of manufacturing operations management (MOM) software. There are two basic types of HMI: supervisory level and machine level. Supervisory level HMI is designed for control room environments and used for system control and data acquisition (SCADA), a process control application which collects data from sensors on the shop floor and sends the information to a central computer for processing. Machine level HMI uses embedded, machine-level devices within the production facility itself.
