   Fixed       Fixed attenuators are used to reduce power levels of a signal by a fixed amount (generally expressed in dB) with little or no distortion or reflection.  The output signal power is reduced relative to the input signal power by a fixed amount over a specified bandwidth while the input and output impedances are maintained close to the nominal level (50 or 75 ohms). 
   Variable       Variable attenuators can vary their attenuation between two values in a specified range.  Depending on how the changes are accomplished there are several types:
  • Continuously variable: The attenuation can be varied in a continuous fashion.
  • Step Attenuators: The attenuation can be varied only by a fixed amount (dB) at a time.
  • Programmable: The attenuation can be programmed in some way.
  • Direct Reading: The attenuation is set by mean of an external device, such as a rotary dial.

   VSWR       Voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is a unit less ratio ranging from one to infinity, expressing the amount of reflected energy at the input or output of the device.  A value of one indicates that all of the energy will pass through, while any other value indicates that a portion of the energy will be reflected.

   Isolation       Isolation is measured in decibels (dB) between any set of output ports. It is calculated as the ratio of the power of one output port to the power at any other output port, with matched terminations on all other ports.
