Pakscan – the flexible control network system for valve actuators

The Pakscan system is used to control actuators and other field devices throughout the plant and to gather important operating data for asset management and preventative maintenance from the connected valve actuators. Around the world more than 150,000 field units are connected to Pakscan networks, delivering robust and reliable plant monitoring and control in all industry sectors.

Overview

Whether you need remote control of a few motorised valves, or full automation of a complex plant, Pakscan can help you to achieve significant savings in both time and costs.

Pakscan allows the remote control of actuators and valves over a simple single twisted pair data highway or wireless network, removing
the need for heavy multicore cables. It also includes automatic inbuilt redundancy of the field networks to ensure control will be maintained even in the event of equipment or cable failure.

Rotork introduces a new Master Station with increased functionality including a large intuitive touch screen interface incorporating NAMUR NE107 diagnostic icons and an ultra-fast field network enabling increased asset management data access for field devices - the Pakscan Plus field network.

Available as a single or hot standby Master Station variant, the Pakscan P4 Master Station has the ability to control up to 300 actuators, and other 3rd party field devices, using secure field communications. With a choice of 4 field networks the Pakscan system has the flexibility to integrate devices on wireless, over long distance wired networks (Plus and Classic) and with Modbus in the field.

Key Takeaways

  • Intuitive user interface - the Master Station has an easy to use large touch screen display provides an easy to use, multilingual, user interface providing quick device setup, interrogation and issue resolution.
  • Field networks open to third-party devices - the P4 Master Station has advanced field network option capabilities including a new ultra-fast Plus Network and a Modbus network - enabling connection to third-party Modbus field devices.
  • The fastest dedicated actuator control network - the ultra-fast Plus network operates at communication speeds of up to 15 Mbit/second using the highly noise immune SHDSL telecoms protocol.
  • High availability seamless redundancy - priority is given to process data and the built-in High Availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) ensures instant isolation of any loop fault, without loss of data, allowing continued operation of the plant if a fault occurs.
  • Up to four field networks on one Master Station - the modular design enables one P4 Master Station to supervise up to four networks - any combination of Plus, Classic, Wireless and Modbus - incorporating up to 300 field units including third-party devices such as mixers, pumps and transmitters.
  • Asset management and datalogging - swift access to plentiful device data optimises the scope for predictive maintenance and asset management, at the DCS/PLC, the asset management system or at the Master Station.

Shelley Pike, Systems Sales Manager

Shelley Pike joined Rotork as an apprentice in 1988, on completing the four-year engineering apprenticeship she was sponsored to go to university where she obtained a degree in electronic engineering. On her return to Rotork she joined the quality department before moving to the electronics design department, where she eventually became a Senior Electronic Engineer and attained a Chartered Engineer accreditation. During her time in the engineering department, Shelley assisted in the design and development of a number of network related products, including the Pakscan master station and various actuator open network interfaces. She is now the Systems Sales Manager for Rotork Controls, heading a team whose role it is to support all Rotork's network products in use around the world.
