Knowledge Management: A Powerful Driver of Engineering Productivity

Advancements in engineering productivity in years past could be traced to tools such as CAD and to product lifecycle improvements. Today, however, engineers face a rising tide of information. They need to be able to successfully navigate in those waters to find the right tools and resources they need to be even more productive. This webinar presents the latest thinking on why knowledge represents the next phase of engineering productivity.

Overview

The engineering profession is changing due to three key factors: the accelerating pace of business, the growing complexity of the profession itself and the challenge engineers face to find answers to big questions and tough problems.

For example, much effort is spent essentially duplicating what's already been done in the past because knowledge is not effectively communicated through the organization or because the person who had that knowledge has left the company. The end result, of no small concern to management, is that much of an engineer's time is tied up in things that detract from the company's bottom-line business goals.

Knowledge management holds the key to unleashing the next surge of engineering productivity. Finding ways to unlock significant productivity gains through effective knowledge management could be applied to innovation, new product and new market development, or improving manufacturing yield. Significant benefits to both top and bottom line performance would result from a senior executive investing in productivity gains within their engineering work force.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn how productivity improvement can be stifled as valuable engineering personnel spend time duplicating work that's already been done.
  • Understand the importance of an effective knowledge-transfer strategy to ensure that the loss of an employee does not gridlock your organization.
  • Learn how knowledge management can improve productivity, drive innovation and secure your organization's bottom-line business goals.
