Optimizing Electrical Design by Choosing the Proper Flexible Insulation Material

Have you ever wondered why there is so much data contained on an electrical data sheet and why only parts seem relevant to your specific design? Learn how DuPont’s Energy Solutions Lab gathers test data for its insulation products, and discover how to apply that data to your electrical equipment design.

Overview

Many factors come into play when selecting a solid insulation for electrical equipment. Depending on the design, application, and the manufacturing process, some material properties may be more important to than others. How does a design engineer prioritize, compare, and apply the extensive information provided on electrical data sheets? Understanding how and why that data is gathered is a good place to start. In this presentation, attendees will see, first hand, how DuPont's Energy Solutions Lab acquires test data for its insulation products. They will learn how that information, translated to electrical data sheets, can help them make decisions relevant to their specific designs. Several short videos will describe the different types of testing taking place on a daily basis - including tests unique to Lab such as dual-temperature aging. In addition, attendees will learn practical applications of various thermal, mechanical, and electrical ratings by way of examples and case histories.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand why testing is performed and reported
  • Discover how tests are carried out in a state-of-the-art test lab
  • Learn how to apply test data to your electrical equipment design

Speakers

Casey Ballard, Transformer Specialist, DuPont™ Nomex® Energy Solutions

Transformer Specialist Casey Ballard is involved with IEEE, CSA, UL, and IEC working groups on insulation aging and transformers. In these roles, he is helping lead industry efforts in designing new test methods for evaluating insulation systems and transformer applications for the alternative energy space. Ballard received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, specializing in Power Systems.
