Scintillation Detectors

 

Scintillation dectectors use a solid or liquid material whose atoms are easily excited by the incoming radiation. These excited atoms emit visible light when they return to their ground state. Common materials used as scintillators are crystals of sodium iodide and certain plastics. If such a material is attached to one end of a photomultiplier tube the photons emitted by the scintillator can be converted to an electric signal. This pulse can, in turn, be sent to an electronic counter. The scintillator device is much more sensitive than the Geiger Counter, mainly because of the higher density of the detecting medium.

Magnetic Chucks
Magnetic chucks use the magnetic force from a permanent magnet, electromagnet or electro-permanent magnet to achieve chucking or holding action. They are only suitable for workpieces made of magnetic materials such as steel or iron.
Chuck Jaws
Chuck jaws are inserts that fit into a chuck and grip the workpiece. There are three types of chuck jaws: base jaws, hard jaws, and soft jaws.
Vise Jaws
Vise jaws are inserts that fit into a vise and grip the workpiece. Smooth-faced metal or soft plastic jaws are used to avoid marring of polished or pliable workpieces.
