The objective of this part is to provide professional high-technology-crime investigators, managers, and supervisors, in either business or government agencies, a basic understanding of the new environment in which we live, work, and play. For the investigator of high-technology crime to successfully establish and manage an investigative unit, he or she must have a basic understanding of the following topics:
Chapter 1. "The Changing World: An Introduction to High Technology." The first chapter presents the fundamentals of the high-technology world in which we live and its impact on the criminal justice and law enforcement systems. This chapter gives a basic overview of high technology based on the computer, the microprocessor, and its peripherals. It places "high-tech" crime in a sociological context as well, something inherently fundamental to the understanding of the role of the high-tech-crime investigator.
Chapter 2. "The Global Information Infrastructure, the Internet, and a Nation's Information Infrastructure."
