Magnetic sector mass spectrometers accelerate ions to more than 100 times the kinetic energy of ions analyzed in quadrupole and ion trap mass spectrometers. The higher accelerating voltage contributes to the fact that ion source contamination is less likely to result in degraded sensitivity. This is particularly important for analysis that requires stable quantitative accuracy such as environmental research. The higher resolution that can be obtained with GCmateII also provides increased selectivity for analytes in the presence of background interference. High-resolution SIM is effective for target compound identification and quantitative analysis The GCmateII employs a QQQHQCQ reverse geometry ion optics system having high ion transmittance, which was originally developed by Emeritus Professor Hisashi Matsuda, of Osaka University. Additionally, it employs a magnetic field and an electric field that are very small as compared with those of a conventional system. The GCmateII thus offers the advantages of a high-resolution double-focusing magnetic sector mass spectrometer,as a benchtop GC/MS system. (Q: Quadrupole electrostatic lens.
