Making The Right Choice: How Important is Cable in a Vision Application?

From Northwire, Inc.

In the Machine Vision industry luckily there are only a few recognized 'standard' types of cable. There are some less used cable types but the most common are Analog video (using coaxial conductors), Camera Link (including MiniCL and PoCL), Firewire, GigE Vision, USB and perhaps in the future HDMI. When you set out to select the ideal cable for your equipment you first need to make sure that the cable meets or exceeds the required industry specifications. Analog video cable needs coaxial conductors that are 75 O ideally with a tolerance of ~5 % to ensure the best performance. Camera Link assemblies including MiniCL must be certified and must meet the stringent AIA Camera Link Appendix D specification. PoCL cables need to meet Appendix D & E. (For a current list of registered cable products visit www.machinevisiononline.org). FireWire cable should meet IEEE1394a (400Mbps) or IEEE1394b (800Mbps). The GigE Vision standard doesn't directly dictate cable requirements but is designed to function with Category 5 or better cable. USB 2.0 should meet the USB-IF specifications and HDMI must meet all applicable HDMI transmission documents.

Products & Services
Flat cables are typically used in computers for internal connections to peripherals. They are also referred to as ribbon cables. Search by Specification | Learn more about Flat Cables
The cable assembly may be used for various computer applications like connecting mice, keyboards, printers, modems or other peripheral devices. Search by Specification | Learn more about Computer Cables
Coaxial cables have one conductor insulated with a dielectric material and then surrounded by the other conductor, usually referred to as the center conductor and shield.  Triaxial cables are specialized coaxial cables. Search by Specification | Learn more about Coaxial Cables and Triaxial Cables
Coiled cords and cables consist of a wire wound around a tubular axis. The result is a spring-like form that is able to stretch and bend with minimal stress on the wire. Learn more about Coiled Cords and Cables
Power cables are solid or stranded conductors surrounded by insulation, shielding, and a protective jacket.  These cables are designed for high voltages (>600 V). Search by Specification | Learn more about Power Cables
