Servo Amplifier Tutorial

From Galil Motion Control

The "Servo Amplifier" on-line tutorial reviews the operation of servo amplifiers used to drive DC and brushless motors. The complete tutorial with audio can be viewed at http://www.galilmc.com/training/webconf.html

The tutorial begins with a discussion of the power regulating methods, leading to the two types, linear and pulse-width-modulated (PWM) amplifiers. The PWM amplifiers are much more common, whereas linear amplifiers are used with a power rating of less than 100 watts. Further discussed is the switching method. The two common approaches, the bipolar and unipolar methods, are presented with their relative merits. The effect of the switching on the current waveform is analyzed and the resulting worst-case ripple on the current waveform is found to be:

Products & Services
Servo drives provide electrical drive outputs to servo motors in closed-loop motion control systems where position feedback and corrective signals optimize position and speed accuracy. Search by Specification | Learn more about Servo Drives
AC motor drives interface controllers to AC motors. They match the control signals (voltage and power levels) as well as the signal type (analog or digital). They also provide power conversion, amplification, and the sequencing of waveform signals. Search by Specification | Learn more about AC Motor Drives
Motion control systems contain matched components such as controllers, motor drives, motors, encoders, user interfaces and software. Components in these systems are optimally matched by the manufacturer. Search by Specification | Learn more about Motion Control Systems
Stepper motor drives power unipolar and bipolar stepper motors in full step, half step, and microstep motion control applications. Search by Specification | Learn more about Stepper Motor Drives
DC motor drives act as the interface and power supply between a motion controller and a DC motor. Search by Specification | Learn more about DC Motor Drives
