Various Interfaces for Rotary Encoders

From Fraba Inc.

The wiring of multiple bit parallel encoders for a multi-axis application is very time consuming. The synchronous-serial-interface is an alternative interface option for such applications. How it works: The position value is transmitted synchronously to a clock signal sent from the control system. The Synchronous-Serial- Interface (SSI) transmits data via a cable with just six cores (one twisted pair for data, one twisted pair for a clock signal and two cores for power supply). Benefits: The SSI transmission provides immunity to high noise. Drivers that meet the RS 485 standard allow transmission rates up to 10 Megabytes per second and cable lengths up to 1200 meters. Fieldbus Interfaces (such as Device Net, Profibus, Ethernet, CanBus, Interbus, etc.) Fieldbus communication is very cost efficient alternative to the above technologies. How it works: The automation components communicate via one cable. There is no need to connect each component with the master. The bus cable runs simply from one component to another. Specific protocols, such as Device Net, Can Bus, Profibus, Ethernet, etc. "organize" the communication between the bus components. Benefits: In addition to cost efficiency, Fieldbus systems are very flexible and can be reconfigured via the bus.

Products & Services
Absolute rotary encoders use optical, mechanical, or magnetic indexing for angular measurement. They do not lose their position after power-down, but instead provide absolute position upon power-up without requiring a home cycle or any shaft rotation.
