Pilot Study: Fugitive Emission Detection and Measurement

From Flir Systems Incorporated

An Optical Fugitive Emission Detection and Measurement Pilot Study was performed at 22 ConocoPhillips Canada (CPC) facilities from April-August 2006. This innovative study represents a strong knowledgesharing opportunity both within the company and across the industry. The study objective was to evaluate new emission detection and measurement technologies (GasfindIR and Hi Flow) and determine actual facility fugitive emission rates. The study findings have been used to evaluate the possible benefits of using the technology to address a business unit-wide application of a Fugitive Emission Management Program for ConocoPhillips Canadian operations. The results of the study have shown: 1. GasfindIR® was extremely effective in detecting HC fugitive emissions from upstream oil and gas facilities and the Hi Flow® Sampler has shown to be an accurate measurement technology. These technologies pose numerous advantages over conventional detection and measurement methods. 2. A company-wide Fugitive Emission Management Program would significantly help to reduce health and safety hazards, GHG emissions, costs (fuel gas and propane usage) and increase production. It is recommended that ConocoPhillips Canada use these technologies as fundamental tools for its Fugitive Emission Management Program.
