Automated IR Imaging, An Overview

Automated IR Imaging has the capability to improve many industrial tasks such as process monitoring and control, predictive maintenance, and quality control. This paper will help identify potential projects for automation, review the various technologies, and show specific examples of camera integrations. Step one in any project is identifying the process or control loop that can benefit from the automation. Many factors should be considered that include response time needed, length of measurement, human factors, and cost. Most tasks can utilize the capability of a processor for control loops or pass/fail determination. A basic commercial off the shelf personal computer can be integrated with IR cameras using Analog, Firewire (1394), or Ethernet and other I/O for an automated system. More advanced systems can be programmed under a real-time operating system. Various methods of automated IR imaging will be discussed using FLIR's IR cameras including: image acquisition and analysis under Microsoft WinXX, and real-time acquisition and analysis for deterministic control. Examples in LabVIEW will be shown to illustrate the concepts.
