Understanding ANSI/ISO Schematic Symbols for Fluid Power Components

From Clippard Instrument Laboratory, Inc.

Recognizing and understanding schematic symbols will enable you to comprehend a circuit's function. Schematic drawings document the machine logic only and are never to be used as a piping diagram. Valves control the direction and amount of flow while actuators are the work producers such as cylinders and rotary actuators. Air preparation equipment conditions the air by providing filtration, controlling pressure, and lubricating the valves and actuators. Directional valves control the direction of flowand is identified by the number of ways or ports and their number of positions. The number of ways defines valve function with a way or port being either a line connection or an exhaust point. Positions identify the number of discrete operating positions of the valve element -typically most air valves are either 2 or 3 positions.

Products & Services
Water valves are designed to handle and control hot water, cold water, ground water, potable water, salt water and/or wastewater. They are made from metal or plastic. Search by Specification | Learn more about Water Valves
Hydraulic valves contain and transfer the flow and pressure of hydraulic fluid in hydraulic power systems. They range from simple shutoff valves to precision control valves. Search by Specification | Learn more about Hydraulic Valves
Gas valves are used to handle and control the flow of gaseous media such as liquefied petroleum and natural gas. They are made of metal or plastic and vary in terms of valve size, pressure rating, number of ports, and flow. Search by Specification | Learn more about Gas Valves
Air valves allow metered fluid flow in one or both directions. They are used in pneumatic circuits to regulate the rate of activation or exhaust of cylinders and other pneumatic devices. Search by Specification | Learn more about Air Valves
Pressure relief valves are self-actuated safety valves designed to relieve excess pressure upstream from the line. Search by Specification | Learn more about Pressure Relief Valves
