From Tyco Electronics, Raychem Circuit Protection Products
The adoption of IEEE 1394, also known as FireWireTM and iLinkTM*, is growing rapidly. Most recently, Microsoft required the implementation of two IEEE 1394 ports in their PC Design Checklist for Windows XP (Version 0.9). A highly attractive aspect of the IEEE 1394 multimedia connection is that it offers an extremely simple method for users to interface computers, peripherals, and consumer electronics products. Part of its end user simplicity is derived from the fact that IEEE 1394 is a bus-powered architecture, meaning peripherals do not necessarily need to supply their own power. Instead, when these peripherals are connected to a power provider, they are simply "single connect and play". It is this kind of ease of use that is playing a significant role in driving Environments where users are connecting devices in a powered network have their design challenges. The IEEE 1394 specification along with various regulatory agencies, specify design requirements to promote the safety of end users and the continued longevity and operation of the IEEE 1394 network and associated devices.
