A design engineer at the company considers using a NL24 washer for a “problem” application. He is in need of some test data, including an untightening graph, to support his recommendation. This test will not only include a vibration test but also a torque-load diagram. Torque-Load diagram 1: In dry condition a torque of approximately 350Nm resulted in a clamp load of 66kN. When lubricated with an oil spray (WD-40) the friction in the joint was reduced and a torque of only 260Nm was needed in order to achieve the same clamp load (66kN). Since the relationship between torque and load is almost linear you may calculate the torque value for every clamp load. Vibration test 1: When the joint was exposed to the above specified vibration conditions no rotation of the bolt/Nord-Lock washer pair was detected. The preload of 106kN dropped to 102kN (3,8%) due to pure settlements, mainly in the thread. The test showed a positive locking result even at relative low clamp loads. The maximum capacity (yield point) of a M24 (grade 5) bolt is 225kN.
