Sputtering Targets and Sputtered Films: Technology and Markets

From BCC Research

fabricated in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, to obtain thin films with desired properties during fabrication of a broad range of advanced devices and coatings. This study covers the utilization of sputtering targets in 25 applications (e.g., semiconductors, passive components, optical storage media, solar cells, medical implants, and nanostructures), grouped within 6 main industry sectors, based on their functionality: electronics, mechanical/chemical, sensors and instrumentation, energy, optical and others. As shown in the Summary Table, the worldwide global market for sputtering targets reached an estimated $2.8 billion in 2007. A total of 1.28 million targets were projected to be consumed to deposit 1,217.7 million square meters of thin films for semiconductors, passive components, recording heads, flat panel displays, data storage media, wear and corrosion resistant coatings, lubricant films, photovoltaic cells, automotive and architectural glass, biological coatings, and other applications.
