Shock Dynamometer: Where The Graphs Come From

From Roehrig Engineering, Inc.

Damper performance is still voodoo to most racers, and they're scrambling to learn all they can. A shock dynamometer is the newest line item appearing in all test and development budgets. The most serious teams have one at the shop and another one in the trailer. They need a person responsible for the operation of this equipment and the associated computers, so now a lot of big teams have a 'shock guy” who's either a full-time employee or an outside consultant who's there at tests and on race weekends. Dampers produce a force proportional to the speed of shaft movement. If you compress a damper slowly, it generates less resistant force than if you move it faster. As mentioned before, a damper on a race car does several very important things including providing a tunable 'feel” for the driver during cornering, controlling wheel travel over road irregularities, and, most important for a ground-effects car, stabilizing the under wing of the car at optimum ride height and rake.

Products & Services
Rotary dampers absorb and slow rotary motion for the mitigation of vibration, noise, and machine component wear. Learn more about Rotary Dampers
Shock absorbers, linear dampers, and dashpots provide motion damping in linear applications. They frequently incorporate fluid dampening, and can include mechanical or elastomeric elements. Search by Specification | Learn more about Shock Absorbers, Linear Dampers and Dashpots
Damper actuators are powered devices that are used to operate a damper and adjust the flow of air and smoke. Search by Specification | Learn more about Damper Actuators
Traction dynamometers and tension dynamometers are used to measure force in tension, traction and weighing applications with cables, guy wires and chain. Learn more about Traction and Tension Dynamometers
Speed controls, including speed regulators and rate controllers, are used to decelerate and regulate the speed of loads such as moving carriages and machining feeds near the end of their travel. Search by Specification | Learn more about Speed Controls
