This system was developed by High Modulus New Zealand Ltd. as an alternative to strip-planked cedar construction in New Zealand, and has been used successfully on several projects there. The basic concept is that of using DIAB structural foam core material in plank form with one skin of unidirectional laminate over a male frame mold. This differs from the other two most common forms of male mold construction using DIAB core materials in several ways.

The first of these is the full male plug mold, where the foam core is generally vacuum bag bonded to the inside skin of the hull, which is laid up over a fully skinned male mold. Professional one-off boat builders generally use this technique. The more typical owner-builder technique is to use plain sheet foam core over a frame and batten male mold, attaching the sheets to the foam, laminating the outside skin, turning the mold over and removing it, and finally laminating the inside skin.
