Magnesium Anodizing

From METALAST International, Inc.

Magnesium anodizing can be used to improve the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and hardness of the base magnesium metal. In addition, anodizing magnesium improves paint adhesion. This bulletin provides general information on magnesium anodizing, facility requirements, and the characteristics of the anodic coating. Magnesium is the lightest structural metal in the world. This grayish-white metal has a specific gravity of 1.74, approximately 2/3 and 1/4 of that of aluminum and steel, respectively. Magnesium is now being used for applications where light weight and high strength are important, such as in aircraft guided missiles, electronic equipment, sporting goods, and particularly automobiles. Fiat Auto, for instance, has succeeded in using about 8 kg of magnesium on its Alfa Romeo 156 model at a production rate of more than 100,000 cars/year. This trend of using more magnesium in cars to decrease weight and improve efficiency is expected to continue. However, magnesium has very poor corrosion resistance because no passivation film naturally forms on its surface, as it does on aluminum. Several surface treatments have been developed to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys, including chromating, phosphating, and anodizing.
