Explaining the Proposed Open Flame Mattress Flammability Standard

On February 16, 2006, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission unanimously approved a new federal mattress flammability standard to take effect July 1, 2007. There are nearly 600 pages available for downloading on the standard through the Consumer Products Safety Commission website (http://www.cpsc.gov/library/foia/foia06/brief/briefing.html). The bedding experts at Stork TCT have combed through this documentation and extracted some of the most pertinent information for your quick reference. 1. What is the Federal Open Flame Standard? The U.S. Federal Government currently has standards regarding the flammability of mattresses exposed to smoldering cigarettes (16 CFR Part 1632). In 2005, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) proposed a safety standard for mattresses and mattress/foundation sets exposed to an open flame ignition source. If finalized, the standard will be codified as 16 CFR Part 1633.
