I must first acknowledge the authors who made the Urban Water Supply Handbook possible. It has been a sincere privilege to have worked with such an excellent group of dedicated people. They are all experienced professionals who are among the leading experts in their fields. References to material in this handbook should be attributed to the respective chapter authors.
During the past 26 years of my academic career as a professor I have received help and encouragement from so many people that it is not possible to name them all. These people represent a wide range of universities, research institutions, government agencies, and professions. To all of you I express my deepest thanks.
One individual who helped me more than words can describe was Professor Ben C. Yen, who unexpectedly passed away on December 23, 2001. Ben was my Ph.D. supervisor at the University of Illinois, where he had a brilliant career in academia. He was one of the kindest and most generous persons who I have ever met. Ben will always be remembered by all who knew him for his warm, friendly, and caring human nature as well as his impressive accomplishments in urban hydrology and hydraulics. Our profession has lost a great educator, scholar, humanitarian, and thinker, far too soon, as he had many more contributions to make. We have all lost a great friend.
