Durability analysis 101

Structural components such as a steering knuckle might be strong enough to withstand a single applied load. But what happens when the part operates over and over, day after day? To predict component failure in such cases requires what's called fatigue or durability analysis. Computer simulations determine how well parts will hold up during cyclic loading. Results are important in calculating and verifying safe part lifetimes. In the past, durability analysis was largely the province of research. For starters, processes that cause part failure are complex. They involve progressive material changes, often highly localized, that end in cracks or complete fracture. For an introduction to durability analysis, it's helpful to start with a few basics. First, because failure is progressive, time is an important element of design. And because failure is localized, it's necessary to understand local stresses. For our purposes, a constant or

Products & Services
DC motor starters combine a controller (most often a contactor) with overload protection, allowing a motor or motor-controlled equipment to be turned on and off. Search by Specification | Learn more about DC Motor Starters
Mechanical testing equipment covers devices used for adhesion, compression, drop (shock), tensile, vibration and fatigue testing. Search by Specification | Learn more about Mechanical Testing Equipment
AC motor starters are used to turn-on and turn-off electric motors and motor-controlled equipment. They use solid-state or electromechanical technologies, and are designed for single-phase or three-phase motors. Search by Specification | Learn more about AC Motor Starters
Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) software is used to track trends, generate statistics such as mean time between failure (MTBF), and determine the root causes of field failures (usually for products covered by a manufacturer’s warranty). Pallet jacks are used to lift and transport pallets. Typically, they only lift a pallet high enough off the ground to allow the pallet to be transported. There are various drive and lift configurations options.   Search by Specification | Learn more about Pallet Jacks
