Lasers Dismantling Concrete Structures

From World Lasers, Inc.

Scientists and engineers worldwide are increasingly focusing on finding newer more efficient, safer, economical and less cumbersome ways to decommission and dismantle increasing volumes of the nuclear facilities that are becoming redundant either because they have expended their useful life or due to technology innovations. In the development of various advanced technologies for the decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear facilities, high powered lasers are being evaluated in many laboratories around the world. Laser material processing, being a non-contact process, minimizes many of the complexities involved in the decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. In the laser centric approach there is no requirement of added media, like abrasive chemicals to assist the process, significantly reducing the volume of secondary waste to be disposed off. In addition, there are other advantages of fewer engineering complexities, low noise, vibrations and dust.
