The ever-shrinking connector

 

 
Demand for higher densities and smaller boards is shrinking connector centerlines and between-row spacings. Surface-mount components for the latest generation Ampmodu family of connectors from Tyco Electronics, Harrisburg, Pa., have 0.031-in. (0.8-mm) contact centerlines. They also contain fragile twin-beam receptacle contacts rather than pin blades. Pins are in the cable-side connector half. The board-mounted connectors come in pocket tape for easy placement on PCBs which are then IR reflow soldered. The bladelike contact of the cable side connector inserts into the twin beams of the receptacle contact on the header. The crimp is turned 90° from its normal
