High-fidelity predictive modelling was used to design a high-performance multitubular reactor for production of terephthaldehyde (TPA). This involved coupling detailed catalytic tube reaction models with a CFD model of shell-side coolants. The resulting hybrid model was used to determine the effect of small adjustments to internal geometry (tube pitch, baffle spacing, etc.) on overall conversion. This helped achieve uniform temperature profile and conversion across the reactor radius, resulting in better product and longer catalyst life.
