Power quality is the interaction of electronic equipment within the electrical environment. This consists of generators, transformers, breakers, wiring and grounding. A recent study by IBM showed that power quality problems cost U.S. businesses more than $15 billion a year. That's an average of $79,000 for each company! Power quality is an increasingly important issue for all businesses. Problems with powering and grounding can cause data and processing errors that affect production and service quality. It is true that today's electrical power is much more reliable than it was just ten years ago. Yet in many areas of the nation the utility grid has been significantly stretched and pulled to its breaking point. It is critical to understand and communicate that it is not what has occurred external to the facility with the utility company that negatively impacts profitability and productivity; it is the increasing density of equipment on fabrication floors and data centers that has created the most significant impact.
