Silicon Designs, Inc. - Technology helps manage the extremes of weather

Big Wind Day: A Gusty Commemoration

Big Wind Day, observed annually on April 12, commemorates a remarkable meteorological event that unfolded exactly 90 years ago. On that blustery day in 1934, atop the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the wind reached an astonishing speed of 231 miles per hour. This f... (read more)

Silicon Designs, Inc. - Celebrating the evolution of the pedometer!

Originating in 18th century in Japan, early pedometers were basic pendulum mechanisms. Thanks to advancements in MEMS DC capacitive accelerometer technology, pedometers have transformed into advanced tools, offering detailed insights into our physical activity.

Once only used in aerospace and military applications, MEMS accelerometers were rapidly embraced by the electronics indus... (read more)

Silicon Designs, Inc. - Why does the accelerometer read zero G's?

Why does the accelerometer read zero G's when it's in free fall?

All accelerometers are used to measure increasing or decreasing acceleration, and they can detect vibration because it is a change in acceleration between multiple directions. Free fall, by definition, is a static acceleration, which means the object may be moving, but its acceleration is not changing at all.... (read more)

Silicon Designs, Inc. - WHY USE A SILICON DESIGNS MEMS DC ACCELEROMETER?

A MEMS DC accelerometer provides several benefits when compared to the piezoelectric and piezoresistive technologies used in many of today’s accelerometers.

There is no lower frequency limit to the sensor’s measurement range. Piezoelectric type accelerometers require a dynamic input of some minimum frequency to generate a response, and below this thresho... (read more)

Silicon Designs, Inc. - Enhanced temperature performance MEMS Sensor

The Model 1522 is an industrial-grade surface mount MEMS DC accelerometer with enhanced temperature performance and a low-cost design. Like the SDI Model 1521, it is designed for use between -55°C and +125°C, however, the Model 1522 has only half the bias and scale-factor temperature coefficients of the Model 1521. Each nitrogen-damped, hermetically sealed Model 1522 acceleromete... (read more)
