Hartford Technologies manufactures precision balls for industries worldwide. We use roller gauging as a sorting process to ensure the proper diameter of every ball.
A roller gauge consists of two long precision rollers that rotate in opposite directions.
The rollers are oriented on an incline so that gravity plus the rotation of the rollers causes the balls to roll smoothly from top to bottom.
A vibratory bowl is used to feed the balls onto the top of the rollers.
The rollers are positioned so that they are slightly closer together at the top versus the bottom.
In this way, smaller diameter balls will fall between the rollers at the top; properly sized balls will fall in the middle; larger balls will fall at the bottom.
Roller gauging can be used on metal, plastic and glass balls.
Hartford Technologies uses roller gauging as a fast and efficient method of ensuring 100% quality.
The machine is an example of Hartford Technologies' retainer assembly capability. This machine will manufacture several million retainers per year. We will be adding a second machine soon to meet increasing customer production demand.
Another example of bearing assembly from Hartford Technology. The bearing is used in an automotive steering column. The machine runs at a rate of 600 pc/hr and includes 100% inspection for the presence of the full complement of rollers.
Hartford opened a specialized, modern state-of-the-art miniature ball facility in China. Here, we can process chrome (52100/GCr15) or 440C balls from 1mm to 3mm and from grades 10 to 50. The plant is ISO 9001 certified and can process 100 metric tons of balls per year.
The miniature ball facility features machines for each step of mini ball processing, including cold heading, small and large flashing, heat treat (hardening) and tempering furnaces, HV hardness testers, and demagnetization equipment, among others. This Hartford facility also provides state-of-the-art ultrasonic cleaning and 100% inspection around 360 degrees of the ball surface using sophisticated vision equipment.

Hartford custom-manufactures precision shafts and pins to your specifications, with length and diameter tolerances depending upon the size and end configuration.
Crowned, rounded spherical, and chamfered ends (including chamfer on both ends) are available.
A "pin" is a mechanical fastener that joins other parts together in an assembly. A pin may act as a pivot, hinge, jig, fixture, or shaft. A jig is typically used to hold a workpiece in place and/or guide a tool operating on the device. A pin is often used to locate or hold parts. Some pins are headed; others are not.
Hartford Technologies produces pins, rollers, dowels, needle rollers and shafts in many configurations. We specialize in precision and custom parts as opposed to commercial off-the-shelf parts.
This video takes you step-by-step through how Hartford Technologies produces high quality precision balls at one of our manufacturing facilities in China.
