Star Couplings: Flexible Power Transmission with Custom Options
Star couplings combine a flexible elastomer element with precision-machined metal hubs, delivering reliable torque transmission while absorbing shock loads and compensating for misalignment. Their modular design allows easy customization to match specific equipment requirements across a range of industrial applications.
Design & Performance
The elastomer spider sits between two metal hubs, providing torsional flexibility that dampens vibration and protects connected equipment from shock loads. This design accommodates angular, parallel, and axial misalignment without generating significant reaction forces on bearings.
Available in two hub configurations:
-
Clamp-Style Hubs: For high-speed and servo applications requiring zero-backlash and secure shaft engagement
-
Set-Screw Hubs: For heavy-duty applications where positive locking is preferred
Material Options
-
Elastomer Elements: Available in different hardness grades for varying torque and damping characteristics
-
Hub Materials: Aluminum for lightweight applications, steel for high-torque requirements, stainless steel for corrosive environments
Application Fit
-
Pumps & Compressors: Smooth operation with vibration isolation extends equipment life
-
Conveyor Systems: Reliable power transmission with minimal maintenance
-
High-Speed Machinery: Balanced designs maintain performance at elevated speeds
-
Heavy-Duty Equipment: Set-screw hubs provide secure connection under high loads
Selection Considerations
When specifying a star coupling, evaluate torque requirements, operating speed, shaft diameters, and environmental conditions. Standard models cover most applications, while custom configurations address specialized needs such as non-standard bore sizes, keyways, or corrosion-resistant materials.
Installation & Maintenance
Proper installation ensures long service life. Verify shaft alignment before assembly, tighten hardware to specified torque values, and periodically inspect the elastomer spider for wear. Replacement spiders are available separately, extending the service life of the metal components.
