SAE Series: SAE Feedthroughs
Featured Product from Douglas Electrical Components
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) threaded feedthroughs are commonly used in industrial, automotive, and high-pressure applications where reliable sealing and mechanical strength are critical. Unlike tapered NPT threads that rely on thread interference and sealants, SAE feedthroughs use straight threads combined with an O-ring seal positioned between the hex and threaded portion of the housing. As the fitting is tightened, the O-ring compresses against the mating surface to create a dependable hermetic seal.
This sealing method typically supports higher operating pressures than traditional NPT designs, although it requires greater wall thickness in the mating bulkhead to properly withstand the applied loads. Metric thread configurations utilizing similar sealing methods are also available.
Douglas Electrical Components manufactures SAE hermetic feedthroughs for a wide variety of electrical connection types. Hermetic terminal seals using SAE threads are especially popular in compressors, motors, and other power transmission applications, where robust sealing and high-current performance are essential. Douglas offers both standard StudSeal terminal configurations and fully customized solutions tailored to specific application requirements.
Beyond power transmission, SAE feedthroughs can integrate connectors, wires, cables, optical fibers, and even flex or rigid circuits into a single hermetic assembly. Combining multiple connection types within one feedthrough simplifies installation, reduces connection points, and supports high-density, lightweight OEM designs.
Using Douglas’ epoxy sealing technology, SAE feedthroughs provide reliable hermetic performance in both vacuum and positive pressure environments while supporting plug-and-play integration for demanding industrial applications.
