In environments with an elevated potential for explosions, equipment engineers must ensure every component protects against ignition risks — including relays. Some flammable refrigerants, for example, increase the potential for ignition and explosion risks when used with electrical devices.

The arcing that can occur when relays are operating is one source of ignition risk.  Industry standards help ensure enhanced protection from ignition risk, including the HAZLOC (hazardous location) standard in the US and Canada and the EU’s ATEX standard.
