East Greenbush, NY (May 24, 2013) – The May 15 Defense & Security Technology online event hosted by IHS GlobalSpec drew more than 1,200 participants, with 81 percent of attendees reporting they are decision makers within their organizations. The free online event is now available on demand to give engineers and industrial professionals easy access to educational presentations and industry-leading supplier resources from the live-day event.

IHS GlobalSpec’s Defense & Security Technology online event provided opportunities to learn about the latest products and solutions from leading defense contractors and security system developers. Attendees also participated in educational sessions that offered industry expertise on innovations and trends across key technology areas including electrical and electronic systems, communications and surveillance, materials, and computer hardware and software solutions. Speakers and topics included:

  • Effective EMI Shielding in Military Environments
EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) control in military electronic systems demands careful attention to shielding of enclosures and cables. While shielding material selection plays an important role, ineffective closures of potential openings, including vents, mating surfaces and cable connector terminations, are the principal reason for shielding failures.
Presented by William D. Kimmel, PE, partner, Kimmel Gerke Associates, Ltd
  • High-performance Cosmetic Coating for Prevention of Thermal Skin Injury This presentation described the challenges involved in developing a skin coating to protect the faces and hands of warfighters and first responders from flash burns caused by “ballistic heat” from explosive devices and other high-thermal-flux sources. Attendees learned about the lethal portion of the flame spectrum and the various material characteristics necessary to create an effective shielding skin coating.
Presented by Robert Lochhead, director and professor, School of Polymers, University of Southern Mississippi
  • How Computer-on-Modules Helps UAVs Reach SWaP Goals
Unmanned system engineers are challenged to solve ever-changing mission requirements that demand the highest performance computing platform to process increasing sensor information in real time, all within strict size, weight and power constraints. This presentation demonstrated how standards-based rugged COM Express modules and application-ready systems help to solve these challenges. Presented by RJ Mclaren, manager, Product Marketing Military Business Unit, Kontron
  • Bringing Analog Functions onto Rugged and Rad Hard FPGAs
Traditionally, analog functions such as ADCs, DACs, DC-DC converter controllers and PLLs could not be embedded in digital devices such as FPGAs. Now engineers are increasing synergies and reliability by implementing some of these functions in all-digital form onboard FPGAs and ASICs for critical missions.
Presented by Allan Chin, CEO, Stellamar LLC<.li>
