IHS GlobalSpec Power Generation & Distribution Equipment
Online Event Now Available On Demand
East Greenbush, NY (September 19, 2013) – The September 11 Power Generation & Distribution Equipment online event hosted by IHS GlobalSpec drew more than 1,100 participants, with 72 percent of attendees reporting they are decision makers within their organizations. The free online event is now available on demand to give engineers and industrial professionals easy access to educational presentations and industry-leading supplier resources from the live-day event.
IHS GlobalSpec’s Power Generation & Distribution Equipment online event provided opportunities to look at the latest developments in the areas of power generating equipment; power distribution equipment; monitoring & control; and alternative power systems. Attendees also interacted with their peers, visited with leading suppliers to the electric utility industry and participated in educational sessions about innovations and trends impacting power generation and distribution. By attending this event, participants had the chance to better understand what's driving change in today's power generation and distribution industry, and discover solutions that will help their businesses remain profitable and competitive in today's marketplace.
Industrial professionals took advantage of these learning and networking opportunities from the convenience of their desktops, without having to budget for travel expenses or lose time away from the office.
“Like all of our online events, the resources and educational opportunities at the Power Generation & Distribution Equipment event were tremendous, with attendees chatting directly with suppliers and viewing thousands of pieces of exhibitor and speaker content like white papers, technical articles and product demos,” said Chris Chariton, senior director, digital media solutions for IHS GlobalSpec. “We look forward to hosting another Power Generation & Distribution Equipment online event next year to deliver high-quality content and robust learning opportunities for industrial professionals and a targeted and engaged audience for our exhibitors.”
Speakers and topics included:
- Energy Optimization: From the Boiler Room to the Board Room
Three industry experts weighed in on thermal storage applications, regulatory changes influencing demand response, and the benefits of a world class energy audit.
Presented by Andrew Weissman, senior energy advisor, Haynes and Boone, LLP; Guy Frankenfield, manager, TES & Biofuel Tanks, DN Tanks; and Anthony Spera, national director of sales, Energy Services, ConEdison Solutions
- How to Make a Safe and Accurate High Power Measurement
Making safe and accurate high power measurements can be challenging, especially with intense electrical and magnetic fields. Attendees learned how to make accurate and reliable high power measurements per industry standards while ensuring the safety of the user and equipment.
Presented by Mike Hoyer, applications engineer, HBM Test and Measurement
- Safer Monitoring of Nuclear Fuel
Attendees learned how a thermo-acoustic heat engine, designed to be a self-powered wireless sensor within a nuclear power reactor, might prevent future melt-downs.
Presented by James A. Smith, materials characterization & process systems engineer, Idaho National Laboratory
- Virtual Instrumentation via Advanced FPGA Programming
This presentation described the concept of virtual instrumentation. Attendees learned how to leverage advanced platform FPGA-based technology to achieve cost reduction, high performance, and field-programmability.
Presented by Roberto Piacentini, senior manager, Strategic Business Development Energy Segment – Global, National Instruments
- Harness High-altitude Winds for Remote Power
Designed for easy mobility and rapid deployment, airborne wind turbines offer a low-cost alternative to diesel power generation. Attendees learned how a breakthrough design, based on proven aerostat technology, captures high-altitude winds that are five to eight times stronger than the winds driving tower-mounted turbines.
Presented by Ryan Holy, business development associate, Altaeros Energies
- Capturing the Benefits of Distributed Resources
Customer interest in “self-generation” is upsetting the traditional model for power generation and distribution. While smart engineering solutions will meet the technical problems of bi-directional power flow, there is a greater challenge facing the electric utility industry: defining the grid’s role as an enabler for behind-the-meter technologies.
Presented by Margarett Jolly, distributed generation ombudsperson, Consolidated Edison Company of New York
Companies exhibiting at this event included: Cummins Power Generation; American National Standards Institute, Inc.; PHOENIX CONTACT USA; ConEdison Solutions; IHS Inc.; Reef Industries, Inc.; and SMC International.
