GlobalSpec Sets Records with Double-Digit Growth in Sales, User Base and Searchable Parts in 2003

Partnerships and Strategic Alliances with eBay, Autodesk and Tech Media
Highlight Record Year

Troy, NY – (Business Wire) – January 30, 2004 – GlobalSpec, Inc., the leading specialized search engine and online community for engineers and technical buyers, today announced it achieved record double-digit growth in sales, registered users and the number of searchable parts in its database during 2003. It also achieved record triple-digit increases in the total number of online visitors.

Despite the economic downturn of the past three years, GlobalSpec has been able to triple its sales growth during that time. As the industry standard in specialized search for engineers and technical buyers, GlobalSpec formed partnerships and strategic alliances over the past year with major industry leaders such as eBay, Autodesk, Design News, Test & Measurement World, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), think3 and PARTsolutions® LLC.

“We are extremely pleased with these record results and partnerships because they were achieved in a very tough economic cycle in both the manufacturing and business advertising sectors,” said Jeffrey M. Killeen, chairman and CEO of GlobalSpec. “The fact that GlobalSpec was able to triple its sales volume and grow its user base five-fold over the past three years is a reflection of the tremendous value our search engine and online community provides day in and day out for engineers and technical buyers.”

Specifically, the total number of online visitors to the GlobalSpec Web site grew 132%, while GlobalSpec’s registered user community grew 85% to 910,000 registered users. The total number of searchable parts also grew by more than one-third. GlobalSpec’s unique, parametrically searchable database now contains more than 890,000 searchable product families representing 50 million parts from more than 10,000 supplier catalogs in the mechanical, electrical, optical, materials handling and custom manufacturing service areas.

GlobalSpec also formed partnerships and strategic alliances in 2003 with several major industry leaders to deliver greater value to the engineers and technical buyers who rely on its search engine and online community to source products and services. Key partnerships formed during 2003 include:

  • eBay - features GlobalSpec on the eBay Business and Industrial category pages, which enables users to have easy access to valuable product information to make important purchase decisions.
  • Autodesk - offers direct access to GlobalSpec in its latest release of DesignCenter Online software.
  • Design News - offers its online audience of design and mechanical engineers direct access to GlobalSpec's searchable database.
  • Test & Measurement World - gives direct access to GlobalSpec's searchable database to its online readership, which includes engineers and engineering managers responsible for buying equipment, software, and services in the test, measurement, inspection and vision markets.
  • American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) - promotes SpecSearch®, GlobalSpec's proprietary specification-based search technology, to its professors, deans of engineering and other engineering faculty members. The alliance extends to Learnon.org, the free career Web site developed by ASEE and a leading online resource for continuing engineering education and distance learning.
  • think3 - integrates SpecSearch into its thinkdesign solution for the product lifecycle management (PLM) industry.
  • PARTsolutions® LLC - integrates PARTsolutions' PARTserver® and SpecSearch search technology.

“As the economic recovery continues, GlobalSpec expects to build on these record results and partnerships to achieve even greater industry leadership in 2004,” said Killeen. “We will continue to focus on providing the engineer and technical buying community with the very best in specialized search engine capabilities to help them more effectively research and source technical products.”
