Benefits of Slew Rate Control in Infineon's MOTIX™ Smart Gate Drivers in Motor Control Applications

The MOTIX™ 6EDL71xx are three-phase smart gate drivers for three-phase brushless DC motor or permanent magnet synchronous motor drive applications. Designers can exploit the SPI interface bus to provide both detailed fault reporting and flexible parameter settings such as gain options for current sense amplifiers and slew rate control of the gate drivers.

Overview

The MOTIX™ 6EDL71xx are the three-phase smart gate drivers for three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor or permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive applications. They have an SPI interface bus, which provides both detailed fault reporting and flexible parameter settings such as gain options for current sense (CS) amplifiers, slew rate control of the gate drivers, and various protection features on gate driver voltage.

Control of the drain-source rise and fall times is one of the most important parameters for optimizing drive systems, affecting critical factors such as switching losses, dead-time optimization and drain voltage ringing that can lead to possible MOSFET avalanching. Correct configuration of the gate drive also helps to minimize EMI emissions.

The 6EDL71xx are capable of controlling the slew rate of the driving signal to control the rise and fall slew rates of the drain-to-source voltage by adjusting the gate drive sink and source currents during different time segments during the switch-on and switch-off processes. This permits the designer to eliminate diode resistor networks commonly used in gate drive circuits. In most cases, gate resistors can be removed altogether, reducing component count and at the same time simplifying and allowing further optimization of the circuit layout.
