Overview

Due to its unique properties, concrete is one of the most common construction materials. Nonetheless, it has its limitations, such as being permeable and prone to cracking issues. For this reason, the protection of below-grade structures or concrete structures exposed to water is critical, as water can damage structures in various ways. Water penetration can lead to leakage and dampness, thereby affecting the structural integrity. It also fosters mold growth, resulting in health concerns, and initiating deterioration mechanisms such as corrosion, ultimately impacting the structure's service life and durability. Considering potential damages to concrete structures, having reliable protection and safeguards against water is vital for structures' serviceability, health, and durability.

Selecting an effective waterproofing system involves a comprehensive consideration of factors spanning from the design stage through various construction phases and ongoing maintenance. A reliable waterproofing system is paramount for all stakeholders involved in construction. For owners, it safeguards their investment by minimizing costs associated with maintenance and repair. Engineers and architects benefit from durable, versatile solutions, providing flexibility to tailor projects based on unique requirements. Contractors reap the advantages of staying on time and on budget by choosing the right waterproofing solution. The importance of these fundamentals extends across the spectrum, ensuring the success and longevity of construction projects.

I've divided our webinar into three main sections: Problem, Solution, and Takeaways. After discussing concrete permeability, we will cover some general information about different solutions. Various guidelines and standards provide insights into waterproofing, and among them, BS 8102 stands out by not only detailing the main types (A, B, and C) but also effectively demonstrating their performance based on factors such as risk assessment and hydrostatic pressure levels. In the upcoming section of the webinar, we will delve into the pros and cons of each type of waterproofing system (Type A - Barrier Protection, Type B - Structurally Integral Protection, and Type C - Drained Protection) based on ASTM D8102, providing a brief explanation of each. We'll also discuss the factors that must be considered in structural design. Specifically, for the selection of Type B products, we'll offer insights regarding the ACI 212 document and highlight the essential factors for consideration. Additionally, we'll touch upon other crucial factors essential for a reliable system, such as supplementary systems. Lastly, we'll explore the importance of the DREAM CODE in ensuring system reliability.

Waterproofing isn't simply about selecting a product; it's about implementing a comprehensive solution where every component works together seamlessly. Understanding the complexities of waterproofing systems, making informed decisions in choosing the right solution, executing proper installations, and emphasizing sustainability are vital steps to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of below-grade

waterproofing systems. At the end of this webinar, we will become familiar with key factors outlined in reputable standards and guidelines, which are essential for ensuring a reliable waterproofing system throughout various stage.
