When it comes to using plastics in high-load applications, the appliance industry is beginning to
follow the trend realized several years ago by automobile manufacturers. Carmakers today use
plastics in grille retainers, brake and transmission components, and structural body panels.
While plastics are common enough in small appliance facias, mechanisms and electronics, large
kitchen and laundry products remain mostly metal. Advances in engineering resins have opened
new design opportunities for plastics in both structural and cosmetic parts in refrigerators,
washers, dishwashers and other “white goods.” Those advances promise dramatic reductions in
cost, number of parts, weight and noise, but they also require a new mindset in a traditional
metal-using community. Appliance designers need to understand the properties of today’s new
engineering resins, along with advances in process delivery systems, to exploit the potential of
plastics.
Products & Services
Industrial paints are pigmented liquids or powders that are used to protect and/or beautify substrates.
Molding compounds and resins are industrial plastics and polymers that are suitable for forming. They are available as pellets, liquids, and powders and are used in processes such as injection molding, compression molding, reaction injection molding (RIM), resin transfer molding (RTM), and blow molding.
Plastic molding services use a number of different molding techniques to produce components, including thermoplastic and thermoset injection molding, blow molding, rotational molding, thermoforming, structural foam molding, compression molding, resin transfer molding (RTM), and others.
Formulation, blending and compounding services perform custom or contractual processing, development, and/or packaging of bulk materials such as plastics, elastomers, adhesives, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, additives and lubricants.
Foams and foam materials are industrial products made from low density elastomers, plastics, and other materials with various structures and porosities.
