As data centers increase the use of immersion cooling to improve energy efficiency and component density, reliable hermetic electrical connections have become essential. Fluorinated dielectric liquids such as Fluorinert™, Novec™, and Galden™ are commonly used to cool electronics because they are thermally conductive, chemically stable, non-flammable, and electrically insulating. To maintain system integrity in these liquid environments, electrical connections must be permanently sealed against both vacuum and positive pressure conditions.
Unlike standard IP-rated connections, which are primarily tested for water resistance, hermetic feedthroughs provide stronger long-term protection against a wider range of fluids with varying viscosities and chemical properties. Douglas Electrical Components designs hermetic feedthroughs that securely seal electrical connections directly within the housing assembly using chemically compatible epoxy technology.
Douglas can hermetically seal virtually any electrical connection type, including RJ45, QSFP, USB 3.0, C13, fiber optics, power studs, busbars, printed circuit boards, cables, and custom combinations of these. This helps reduce signal loss, improve reliability, and maintain fit, form, and function in compact server environments.
In addition to electrical flexibility, Douglas offers customized mechanical sealing solutions through in-house machining capabilities. Housings can be designed as multi-connection plates or specialized assemblies using materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and various plastics. All assemblies are factory leak-tested and hipot tested to customer specifications, ensuring dependable performance in demanding immersion-cooled data center applications.
