SHOULD YOU GET AN ELCI?

WHAT IS AN ELCI?
An Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter (ELCI), or currently referred to by the National Electrical Code (NEC) as Ground Fault Protection Equipment (GFPE), is a safety device that is meant to detect any form of leakage in an electrical current. While an ELCI functions similarly to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), it is more commonly found in commercial and industrial environments rather than in a residential setting. An ELCI operates by monitoring the entire electrical current flowing through a system. If it detects less electricity returning to the source supplying source from the equipment (which could be from electrical leakage), the ELCI will be tripped in order to protect personnel from electrical shock and the appliance from damage. Just like with a GFCI, the larger the piece of equipment, the higher the amperage capacity your ELCI must be.
WHY DO YOU NEED AN ELCI?
Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupters (ELCIs/GFPEs) were implemented to provide protection against electrical shock that could cause harm to people and equipment in any environment where a standard Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) does not offer sufficient/compatible protection.
WHERE IS AN ELCI NEEDED?
An Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter (ELCI/GFPE) should be installed in any environment where there is an increased risk of electrical leakage and a standard Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) may not be adequate due to equipment size. Specifically, an ELCI is needed for higher powered machinery, like welding equipment, marina electrical pedestals, & heat tracing products.
SHOULD YOU GET AN ELCI?
Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupters (ELCIs/GFPEs) are mandated by the National Electrical Code (NEC) for a few types of applications (heat trace, marine electrical), although it isn’t covered as extensively as Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). ELCIs are still critical lifesaving elements that should be used throughout commercial and industrial settings to prevent electrical hazards and provide livesaving protection for personnel of that equipment.
North Shore Safety
North Shore Safety offers a wide variety of GFCI, ELCI, and EVSE products in our LineGard electrical protection series.
