Board Mount Power Supplies Information

board mount power supply selection guide

Board mount power supplies are devices that can be embedded or mounted on computer boards or general PCB boards.  They are not IC power supplies because they are not a chip; however they do contain all the parts of a regular power supply in a much smaller form factor.

Board mount power supplies (BMPS) are also referred to as distributed power architecture (DPA). They are on-board DC/DC converters and DC/DC regulators.

Selection Factors

When selecting a board mount power supply, consider:

  • Power density
  • Switching frequency
  • Converter topography
  • Efficiency

Standards

CSA E61558-1 - Safety of power transformers, power supplies, reactors and similar products - Part 1: general requirements and tests

IEC 61204 - Low-voltage power supply devices, DC output - performance characteristics
