TABLE OF CONTENTS The trend of convergence in the domain of mobile computing encompasses a multitude of wireless technologies that must coexist and interoperate seamlessly. These technologies have opened up enormous opportunities for applications that can provide ubiquitous wireless data access and real-time communication over the forthcoming, fully integrated, high-speed networks. This chapter concerns a number of open issues with regard to the heterogeneous mobile wireless networks that smart phones or other mobile devices will access. A significant amount of effort by the network research community has been made to address these problems. The following issues represent the most important problems that must be addressed as 3G cellular networks and a variety of new wireless technologies are being rolled out:
