Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the field of engineering concerned with the ability of electrical and electronic devices to co-exist with users of the radio spectrum.
EMC addresses two different issues that arise from the same phenomena within electrical and electronic devices their unintentional antenna action. An antenna is a device specifically designed to do two things either convert an input voltage signal to an output electromagnetic wave (when transmitting ), or alternatively to convert an input electromagnetic wave to an output voltage signal (when receiving ). An intentional antenna does this by design (its form being designed to maximise the efficiency with which it performs) through the exploitation of basic physics. Electrical and electronic equipment can also do this, as an unintended by-product of their operation.
To display unintended antenna action, an electrical or electronic device needs to have two components an unintentional voltage source and an unintentional antenna.
An example that many readers will have personal experience of is the effect that a domestic, mains-powered hair dryer can have on Medium Wave (MW) broadcast reception. The electric motor within the hair dryer can, without due consideration during design, induce signalling onto the attached mains cable that in turn acts as an unintentional antenna. In this instance, the frequencies of the noise generated by the motor and the length of the main cable can conspire, totally unintentionally, to generate an efficient but again unintentional antenna.
