Implementing Extranets: The Internet as a Virtual Private Network

In Chapter 1, I gave you some definitions and lessons learned from using extranets. I hope that the previous chapter convinced you that there are some very significant business benefits to be gained by using the Internet as a virtual private network or extranet. (The terms Internet as a virtual private network, virtual private network (VPN), and extranet are used as synonyms throughout this book.)
In Chapter 2, we're going to switch gears a bit, become more technical, and examine the technology issues that are driving the costs, benefits, and return on investment analysis of using the Internet as a virtual private network. In examining these issues, you will develop a feel for the exciting possibilities, challenges, and changes going on around the Internet as a virtual private network. The objectives of this chapter are to:
