TABLE OF CONTENTS The ultimate goal of electronic discovery (e-discovery) is to provide electronically stored information (ESI) to a requesting party, whether it s the government, opposing counsel, or a third-party entity. As a former information technology consultant, it was easy for me to transition into the computer forensics industry. The progression from one to another allowed me to better prepare for a career in managing large and complex cases involving electronic discovery. One of the key elements of becoming a reliable source in the electronic industry is going to be your ability to translate technical information to ensure that you understand enterprise content management, data preservation, data collection techniques, culling, document review and productions. The objective of this chapter is to provide you with additional knowledge as to how to navigate a corporate infrastructure, and enterprise content, and address its links to e-discovery.
Discovery engineering is a term that has been used in other fields for some time, but in our field, e-discovery engineering is a term that should be applied to individuals overseeing the entire electronic discovery process.
