Data Quality

THE DWQ PROJECT

In this section, we briefly review the structure of the DWQ project, the basic components of data warehouse solutions, and the linkage to formal quality models.

DWQ Project Structure

DWQ is a three-year cooperative research project (1996 1999) funded by the European Communities under the Reactive Long Term Research Branch of their ESPRIT IV R&D Program. Partners include the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, Aachen University of Technology, Germany, the German AI Research Center DFKI, INRIA Rocquencourt, France, the University of Rome, Italy, and the IRST Research Center, Italy. The project closely cooperates with Software AG, a leading European vendor of data warehouse products and solutions and also with major ongoing data warehouse efforts within such organizations as the Italian Telecom, the French Ministry of Environment, the French Institute for Environment (IFEN), Air France, and the Office of Statistics of the City of Cologne in Germany.

DWQ Objectives

The research objectives of the DWQ project address three critical areas where quality factors are of central importance to data warehousing. The aim is to:

  1. Enrich the semantics of meta-databases with formal models of information quality in order to enable adaptive and quantitative design optimization of data warehouses;

  2. Enrich the semantics of information resource models to enable more incremental change propagation and conflict resolution; and

  3. Enrich the semantics of data warehouse schema models to enable designers and query optimizers to take explicit advantage of the temporal, spatial, and aggregate nature of data warehouse data.
