Integrating Security Between Products
When integrating e-mail systems, one challenge will be to provide a security system that will work over different products or between intercompany borders. For example, if your company has three major clients, it is natural that the employees will want to communicate?and for sensitive matters, it is essential to provide a secure mail function. Not only will you have to manage the integration between the two mail systems, the companies are likely to be using different client and mail server software.
The type of encryption standard that you use, such as PGP or S/MIME (described at the start of this chapter), and the secure links in use between mail servers, such as SSL (described earlier in this chapter ), will determine how easy it is to provide a cross-border solution. When you start to plan your implementation, you should aim to cover the following points:
? Technical proficiency of users . PGP and S/MIME client-based mail security systems work on an individual message basis rather than a general encryption provided by proprietary platforms such as Lotus Notes or Microsoft Exchange. PGP in particular expects the users to be technically proficient enough to manage their keys and recognize when and how to encrypt and decrypt sensitive information?it?s not an automatic process.
